But when that fails\, athletic trainers and doctors are on standby to make sure the athlete has a healthy recovery. Last year\, around 150 athletes at four area high schools suffered a concussion. With the help of ImPACT testing\, or Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment Cognitive Testing\, physicians and athletic trainers were able to determine the best course of treatment for these athletes.\n\n\n\n Dr. Payton Fennell\, with FryeCare Sports Concussion Clinic\, is Hickory's new Sports Medicine and Concussion Care physician. Fennell is board certified in sports medicine. He has more than 10 years of experience using ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment Cognitive Training). He is a specialist in concussion management and baseline neurocognitive testing. Until moving to Hickory\, Fennell was a team physician for the Carolina Hurricanes while practicing in Cary\, NC.
